Sophia Besch is a research fellow at the Centre for European Reform. She works on European defence issues, with a focus on EU Common Defence and Security Policy, European defence industry co-operation, NATO and German security and defence policy. Sophia also hosts the CER podcast.

Sophia has contributed opinion pieces and comments on defence issues and on German foreign policy to various magazines and newspapers, including The Telegraph, The Atlantic, The Guardian, The Economist and The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. She also commentates regularly on the broadcast media, including ZDF Heute, BBC World News and BBC Newsnight. She has given oral evidence to the House of Common Defence Select Committee on the subject of the future of UK-EU defence co-operation. 

Prior to joining the CER, Sophia was a Carlo Schmid Fellow at the Policy Planning Unit at NATO HQ and worked as a researcher for the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. She holds an MA in International Security from Sciences Po Paris and an MSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics.
